3 die in plane crash on interstate in central Illinois, police say
Three people were killed when a small airplane crashed along Interstate 55 Tuesday morning, state police said.
The Logan County coroner confirmed the number of people who died but didn’t publicly identify the victims, pending notification of relatives.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane crashed under unknown circumstances onto the median of the interstate and was destroyed upon impact. The type of aircraft was not immediately known.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash scene.
The plane crashed at approximately 8:49 a.m.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash, assisted by the FAA, said Elizabeth Isham Cory of FAA public affairs. The investigation will take a year or more, she said.
