Arizona man gets jail time for putting baby in freezer

PHOENIX – An Arizona man who admitted putting his 7-month-old son in the freezer while high on methamphetamine was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years in prison.
Chance Kracke, who pleaded guilty in January to two counts of felony child abuse, was also ordered to serve lifetime probation by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Robert Gottsfield.
Police say Kracke, 25, was high on methamphetamine last August when he carried his infant son in his arms into the kitchen at his Chandler, Ariz., apartment to prepare some food.
He told police in the days after his arrest that because the floor was too dirty, he placed his son in the bottom shelf of the freezer and shut the door, opening it when the child began crying.
His son emerged with a laceration and a lump on his forehead, possibly from his head hitting the door, police said. Kracke told police the child had been in the freezer for a «minute or two.»
Police were called to the home after a call from the grandmother, who was worried about the size of the lump on the boy’s forehead, according to polices.
Leann Kracke, the boy’s mother, was sentenced to lifetime probation in the case. The 26-year-old told investigators that her husband threatened to harm her if she told police about the incident.
