AVEENO(r) Be An Active Natural(tm) Fund October Finalist – P.E.A.R.L Girls
Keisha Howard’s lifelong involvement in pageants showed her first hand the importance of manners, decorum and social skills. While working as a Social Worker in a public high school in Dallas, Keisha noticed that many of the girls at the school suffered from low self-esteem and were acting out. Wanting to provide these girls with a place to turn to, Keisha started an afterschool program called “a class act,” where the girls could build confidence and learn social skills.
After a number of calls from the participants’ parents, noting the difference in their daughter’s behaviors, Keisha knew she was making an impact and she could reach more girls. After receiving her Masters Degree in Counseling, Keisha expanded the program and renamed it P.E.A.R.L Girls! P.E.A.R.L. is an acronym for Poised, Elegant, and Responsible Leaders. The organization focuses on inner- beauty, self-esteem and empowerment, teaching the participants life skills, public speaking and philanthropy. With over 700 girls through the program thus-far, Keisha is hoping to continue to touch young, impressionable girls in her community with her messages.
Yesterday, P.E.A.R.L Girls! was announced as a semi-finalist in the AVEENO® Be An Active Natural™ Fund – a monthly Facebook competition, which awards $10K grants to individuals and organizations making a positive change in their community. We hope that you can support Keisha by spreading the word of her semi-finalist status to your readers, urging them to vote for P.E.A.R.L Girls! on AVEENO’s Facebook page. Voting ends on Friday, so Keisha needs support today!
