The Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex is the fastest growing area in the country for New Americans, who comprise 44% of the North Texas population. However, due in part to the lack of ESL citizenship preparation programs, only 19 % of the region’s foreign-born are naturalized citizens, the second-lowest proportion among 23 metropolitan areas.

Anne Marie Weiss-Armush, President of DFW International Community Alliance says «As the fee for the naturalization exam is $680, two weeks salary for many, and applicants have only two chances to pass the exam, many green card holders have hesitated to apply for citizenship on their own. We’re pleased to have served more than 1,500 of our neighbors during the past year, helping them toward greater opportunities and engagement in American civic life.»

DFW International Community Alliance is the principal provider of citizenship classes in Dallas and the only organization that accepts students with limited English skills. The nonprofit serves as the portal for global North Texas, a network of the regions ethnic and internationally-focused civic, community and educational organizations. Its mission is to build mutual understanding and respect by linking diverse international cultural communities. DFW International Community Alliance promotes and links North Texas global groups through its website and cultural calendar at http://www.dfwinternational.org/ .
