DFW Sports Mix

We are on the doorstep to the beginning of March Madness. And DFW is very much in the mix with three basketball tournaments. First, the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Classic, March 2-5 at SMU’s Moody Coliseum, brings the best of the C-USA league as the teams battle for the bid to the NCAA basketball tourney. The Ladies team from SMU is having a good season, hopefully they can win it all on their home court.

The Big 12 Men’s and women’s basketball classic is coming to the American Airlines Center and Reunion Arena on March 7-12. Remember last year, Baylor won it all in women’s basketball. The road back will be a tough one with Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas, a suprising Texas A&M team. Getting to repeat will be a chore for the defending champion Baylor Bears.

For the Men, the Texas Longhorns have been in the top 10 for most of the year. Watch Seagoville’s LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed last years action due to a nagging hip injury. He has made a difference in the Horns so far. The have to stay healthy to endure the long road to the final four.

And the NCAA men’s midwestern regionals are coming March 17-19 at the American Airlines Center. Tickets are on sale now through the Big 12. Go to www.big12sports.com for info.

One team that want to be in the 64 team playoff party is the SMU men’s team. Looks like coach Jimmy Tubbs got the pieces in place. A good point guard in Des Winningham, a freshman who will take over the reins when senior Bryan Hopkins graduates this year. The center of attention is at center with the buzz of one Bama Fall. The freshman has made an impact with the Ponies. Averages 3 blocked shots a game. The reason why SMU is third in the C-USA in blocked shots. More consistant play and shooting, and the Ponies will see some post season action. They need to get hot before the C-USA classic in Memphis. They could do some damage then.
