Dr. Saavedra Houston ISD Supt. wins honor

Dr. Iliana Alanís, Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio and President of The Texas Association for Bilingual Education, is proud to announce the selection of Dr. Abelardo Saavedra as the TABE 2009 Public School Educator Honoree. Dr. Saavedra will be honored at this year’s TABE conference to be held in Houston, Texas at the Westin Galleria. The annual conference will attract attendees from throughout the state of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Dr. Saavedra was selected among other nominees for his outstanding work with all children in the Houston Independent School District and specifically with the exemplary bilingual program in HISD, a model program that has been recognized nationally and has been replicated by many school districts in the nation. Under his leadership, the bilingual program for HISD has been hailed as one of the most successful models in the country.
