Final El Hispano News “Parents Step Ahead” Event Included Health Fair

DALLAS.- The educational community outreach program concluded its final school event. Over 200 attendees took part in the day’s seminars and participated in the event’s health fair with over 26 health care organizations contributing their time to educate parents on the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. In collaboration with the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) and the National Association of Hispanic Publications Foundation (NAHPF); and with the support of several national corporate sponsors; El Hispano News’ “Parents Step Ahead” program is an educational community initiative aimed at educating, enabling and empowering parents to take a proactive role in the lives of their children.

The program consisted of three events held at three different elementary schools within the DISD: John W. Runyon Elementary on September 30, Leila P. Cowart on October 21 and Julian T. Saldivar on November 4. Each event hosted different seminars aimed at educating parents on becoming better role models for their children. Seminar topics included: computer literacy, financial literacy, preventive health measures, internet safety, and dangers of drugs and gang violence; among others. Complimentary breakfast and child care was offered at each event.

Texas State Representatives Roberto Alonzo and Rafael Anchia, each assisted one event to offer words of encouragement and to raffle two computers at each event. The home computer systems were donated by corporate sponsor, AT&T. To conclude the program 6 parents will be selected based on program participation and be recognized as The “Parents Step Ahead” Parent of the Year at El Hispano News’ 20th Anniversary Gala on December 7 at The Westin City Center Dallas in downtown Dallas . Dr. Michael Hinojosa, DISD superintendent, is Chairman of the “Parents Step Ahead” committee and will assist in selecting the parents along with other local community and corporate leaders. Other corporate sponsors include: GMAC, United Healthcare, Wal-Mart, Anheuser-Busch ETS, Dallas Community College , American Airlines and Coors in partnership with MVParents.com. Media partners include: Latina Style, El Extra, El Lider USA , El Heraldo, Novedades News and the Dallas Public Library
