Local DaVita Clinic has Provided Nocturnal Dialysis to 5 Members of Garland Community
Treatment option provides overnight care for patients who benefit from slower treatments
Garland, TX – DaVita Inc., one of the nation’s leading providers of kidney dialysis services, announced today that DaVita Garland has provided 5 Garland community members nocturnal dialysis treatments. For nocturnal dialysis, patients arrive at the clinic in the evening and spend the night to receive approximately 8 hours of dialysis treatment. Nocturnal dialysis is an important treatment option because it allows patients to have their entire day free for work, school or other ongoing commitments.
Nocturnal dialysis is gentler than conventional dialysis, as it is extended over more hours per session than the usual in-center treatment. In-center hemodialysis is generally done during the day, three days a week, for a three-to-five hour period. With nocturnal dialysis, however, patients sleep at the clinic three nights a week while they are attached to the dialysis machine.
The slower treatment time allows for reduced flow rates, which can be helpful for patients who have complications from the blood flow and fluid removal rates of conventional hemodialysis. Because fluid is being removed from the body at a slower rate, the likelihood of experiencing cramping or drops in blood pressure is diminished for some patients. Clinical studies indicate the slower treatment can improve overall health and quality of life for many dialysis patients.
“At DaVita, we treat the whole patient, not just the kidneys, and part of that is empowering our patients to select the option for care that fits their lives best,” said Kent Thiry, DaVita chief executive officer. “Making nocturnal dialysis available provides our patients that freedom of choice.”
To be eligible for DaVita’s nocturnal dialysis, patients must be medically approved, and adhere to their treatment plans as prescribed by their doctors.
