Man in Immigration Custody Dies
COLUMBUS, Ga. — Federal officials said a Mexican citizen being held on immigration violations has died at a Columbus hospital.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said in a statement Monday that 39-year-old Roberto Martinez Medina died on March 11 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Martinez was being held at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin.
ICE spokesman Ivan Ortiz said it is believed that Martinez had a heart attack but the agency is awaiting the results of an autopsy.
ICE officials said they have notified Martinez’s family and the Mexican consulate of his death.
