Police chiefs meet in Miami to discuss immigration
MIAMI – Leading law enforcement officials from across the nation are advocating for a stronger voice in immigration reform at a panel discussion in Miami.
Authorities from police departments at the center of the immigration problem are scheduled to speak at the panel this morning: Chief John Timoney, of Miami; Chief Art Acevedo, of Austin, Texas; and former Chief Art Venegas, of Sacramento, Calif. Acevedo is also head of the National Latino Peace Officers Association.
The panel comes after recent indications that immigration reform efforts from the federal government might not be far off.
President Barack Obama met Thursday with members of both political parties to discuss immigration and said that everyone agrees the system needs to be fixed.
