Students donate more than $45,000 to local charities

Dallas ISD students who collected more than $45,000 in pennies and other spare change through the Common Cents campaign recently donated that money to 27 local nonprofit and charity organizations. Students from 34 schools participated in this year’s student-led coin collection. The top two schools raising funds were Skyline High School with $8,500; followed by Edwin J. Kiest Elementary School with $3,025.

Common Cents raises money for charity and nonprofit organizations while encouraging good citizenship and social responsibility in students. The idea for the program was brought to the district by Dallas philanthropist Louise Gartner to teach children to make a difference in their community.
