Superintendent Michael Hinojosa visits newest schools on first day of school
The start of a new school year on Aug. 14 saw the opening of 11 new campuses. A 12th new campus will open later this fall.
At Leonides Gonzalez Cigarroa, M.D. Elementary School, one of the new schools that opened, the excitement of the first day of class was heightened by the visit of Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
During his early morning tour of the three-story campus on Webb Chapel Road, Hinojosa greeted staff, students, and parents.
On route to greet parents and students and trailed by TV cameras and reporters, the superintendent said hello to Jamie Castillo, the school building supervisor. Castillo told Hinojosa that the building was ready for the start of classes.
In the school cafeteria, the superintendent asked first-graders Arturo Sandoval Lopez, who recently moved from California, and Christopher Flores whether they were excited about attending class in a brand-new school.
Oh, yes, they were, the boys chimed in.
Juana Pineda, one of the parents in the cafeteria with their children, said she really likes that many of the teachers at Cigarroa are bilingual and that the new school is large.
Moments later, Hinojosa said hello to students in Elizabeth Cardenas bilingual kindergarten class.
“Do you like your new school?” he asked in Spanish.
Several of the students raised their hands and said they really liked their big, new classroom, which is near the cafeteria on the first floor.
Hinojosa’s next stop was Nicole Watkins’ first-grade class, where he chatted with several of the students, who were excited to see TV cameras and many visitors.
“You are the biggest first-graders I’ve ever seen,” the superintendent quipped.
“I am big,” said one of the more excited first-graders.
Earlier in the morning, Hinojosa told reporters that Dallas ISD had gotten off to a great start and that this year is an exciting time for the district.
Many precautions have been taken to keep students safe during this hot summer, he said.
In addition to his tour of Cigarroa, Hinojosa also visited Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School, Sam Tasby Middle School, and Emmett J. Conrad High School, all in board trustee District 3.

Se parte de este nuevo projecto que tiene como proposito ayudar a jóvenes inmigrantes a alcanzar el “sueño americano” de obtener una educación universitaria. Cada año miles de estudiantes inmigrantes se ven forsados a terminar sus estudios por que piensan que la educación esta prohibida para ellos. Desgraciadamente estos estudiantes desconocen leyes tales como esta (HB 1403) debido a que hay muy poca comunicación publica al respecto. Unase a nosotros y ayudenos a cambiar el futuro de miles de estudiantes.

La nueva ley permite a estudiantes indocumentados asistir a la Universidad, ser elegibles a participar en ciertos programas de asistencia económica del estado de Texas y adquirir ayuda financiera de la Universidad. La propuesta de ley HB 1403, presentada en 2001 en la legislatura estatal de Texas por el representante Rick Noriega, convirtió a Texas como el primer estado de la nación en otorgar ayuda financiera a inmigrantes sin documentos para estudiar en universidades. Se calcula que en Estados Unidos, cada año se gradúan 65 mil estudiantes indocumentados de la escuela preparatoria, pero solo 6,587 estudiantes se han beneficiado de la gran oportunidad que esa ley ofrece. No obstante, hay varios requisitos que los jóvenes tienen que cumplir para poder solicitar esta ayuda.
REQUISITOS
Haberse graduado de una preparatoria de Texas
Haber vivido en el estado de Texas por tres años
Haber obtenido el G.E.D. por medio de una preparatoria pública o privada en el estado de Texas
No haberse inscrito en una Universidad o Colegio antes del semestre de otoño del 2001 Darle a la Universidad una declaracion jurada ( affidavit) de que usted solicitarà la residencìa permanente tan pronto como califique. Esto no està relacionado con inmigraciòn.
