THE DFW SPORTS MIX By Don Arnick
Congratulations to Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowtizki. In a era where players are seeking more money playing in other places, Dirk stayed with the Mavs. A move that paid off in a NBA championship. And he did it all in a Mavs Uniform, for 1000 games. And that 1000th game was a winner as the Mavs beat Phoenix. The Mavs are playing better since the two opening loses to Miami and Denver. New players Vince Carter and Lamar Odom are fitting in. nicely. The got a quailty win over Oklahoma City recent, the should have won the game in OKC . Expect the Mavs to play better as the season goes along. And with one shot of a free throw, Dirk Nowtizki now has over 23,000 points in his NBA career. No big fanfare that came with it, just business as usual as the Mavericks defeated the Milwaukee Bucks.
The College Bowl Season has ended….finally. What a way to end it with Alabama shutting out number one and undefeated LSU 20-0. Bama defense stole the show as they bottle up the Tigers all night long. And in a game which was like home game for LSU, Alabama made the Tiger fans cry all the way to Bourbon Street.
SMU and TCU won their bowl games. The Big 12 had a great showing in the bowl season with 8 teams. 6 of them won, only Kansas State and Iowa State came out on the losing end of their games.
I covered a Dallas Stars game for the first time in years. And there is improvement some areas of their game. I asked Stars Coach Glen Gulutzan about what part of their game that needs improvement as the Stars seek a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and he said the power play and the penalty kill. The NHL has got past the halfway part of their season. Points mean a lot from here on into the end of the season, and the Stars know it. In a very competitive western conference, style points don’t matter, just get the wins that get you further up the Conference ladder. And put the Stars in the playoffs since 2008.
