The lives that the Ambani family lead are surreal to see, let alone imagine for yourself. The source of their incredible wealth is billionaire patriarch Mukesh Ambani, and he naturally provides an enviable existence for his wife, Nita, and their children, Anant, Akash and Isha. Don’t believe us? Well, just take a peek at their lavish lifestyles, which include day-to-day living in a privately owned skyscraper to nights spent rubbing elbows with A-list stars.
So it’s clear that the Ambani family have amassed a huge fortune. Yet they actually come from humble roots. In fact, Dhirubhai Ambani – Mukesh’s father – was the son of a schoolteacher. But he then served as a business clerk before he began a textile trading company with his cousin in the 1960s.
The first office of Reliance Commercial Corporation was nothing out of the ordinary at this point in time, of course. It was in fact just a 350-square-foot space with a single telephone, one table and three chairs. The Ambani family lived nearby in a two-bedroom apartment, too, and their place was a far cry from the home they’d inhabit in the future.
In spite of its very humble beginnings, Reliance Commercial Corporation expanded wildly. Dhirubhai’s cousin left – because, it’s said, he was less of a risk-taker than Dhirubhai – but the Ambani family patriarch’s style of leadership must’ve suited the company. Eventually, the Ambanis would incorporate energy, petrochemicals, natural resources and telecommunications into the business’ offerings.
