Mountain View College: Start here, go anywhere!

Mountain View College has provided accessible, affordable, and accredited educational opportunities in southwestern Dallas County since 1970. As the second of seven colleges established within the Dallas County Community District, Mountain View offers flexible course scheduling and a broad range of options for traditional and non-traditional students.

More than 70 types of associate degrees and certificates in a variety of careers and academic fields are offered; a majority of credit courses meet freshman and sophomore course requirements for a bachelor’s degree at four-year colleges and universities. The college also offers hundreds of continuing education courses for students of all ages, as well as distance education courses and fast-track courses between semesters.

Students working toward a four-year baccalaureate degree are able to prepare for the following areas: art, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, criminal justice, education/teacher prep, engineering, English, geology, government, history, humanities, journalism, mathematics, music, nursing, philosophy, physics, psychology, Spanish, sociology and speech communications.

Career programs at Mountain View offer college-level training in selected technical or service fields, including the following: accounting, alternative teacher certification, computer-aided design and drafting, computer information technology, criminal justice, electronic commerce, electronics technology, health information technology, management careers, Microsoft certification, network cabling certification, nursing and welding technology.

Financial aid is available in the form of grants, loans, scholarships an employment in Work Study programs for those who qualify. Scholarships are also offered through the Dallas County Community College District Foundation to students with various eligibility requirements. The foundation’s main scholarship program is Rising Star, which covers the cost of books and tuition in the DCCCD, including Mountain View, to qualified high school seniors who graduate from Dallas County public schools.

More than 6,000 students of various ages, ethnicities and backgrounds enroll in credit courses at Mountain View each semester. Many students enroll upon graduation, but many others are already part of the workforce. The typical student at Mountain View is 26 years old and attends college part-time while juggling family responsibilities and full-time work.

Enrolling more than 40 percent Hispanic students each semester, Mountain View is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award associate degrees and certificates.

Register for the Fall 2006 from June 19-Aug. 27. Regular registration times are from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Fridays. Saturday registration will be conducted on Aug. 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and Aug. 26 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

More options for those with busy schedules!

Starting in Fall 2006, you will have more options to choose from with our new Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday class meeting schedules. The new schedule format not only allows us the opportunity to provide more classes for you, but it also gives you the flexibility to take classes either two days or three days a week.

Additionally, the new format allows you to take a full load of classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and finish by noon each day! The new schedule format impacts the weekday mornings only; all afternoon classes, evening classes and Tuesday-Thursday classes will continue to meet two days per week. Aside from that, you still get to pick your weekend and online classes to fit your busy schedule.

MVC’s spacious and stunningly scenic campus is located in southwest Dallas, just off Loop 12 (Spur 408) on Illinois Avenue. MVC has a convenient DART bus stop at its east entrance. Nestled in the historic Oak Cliff area, MVC is just seven miles from downtown Dallas.
