Spiritual Significance of Christmas

My husband and I moved our home several months ago. Due to some work that needed to be done, we have had our bed set up in the living room for three months now. Boxes and furniture are still piled around in a most disorderly manner. The Christmas season is here and it is time to decorate but what now? This got me to thinking in a larger way about the real significance of the Christmas holiday season. Is it only about lights, decorations, shopping at the mall or is there some deeper, more meaningful way to celebrate?

If Christmas celebrates the appearing of Christ to mankind, what might be a truly substantial way to commemorate this event? As I generally do when faced with a perplexing situation, I prayed.

Beneath the materialistic trappings of Christmas lies its basis—the birth of Jesus, the celebration of the appearing of the Christ, Truth to mankind. Christmas celebrates more than a human nativity. The substance of Jesus’ life brought enlightenment, health, hope and a sense of each individual’s oneness with God. It does have to do with peace. It has very little to do with tinsel and excessive materialism.

My prayer affirmed what I’ve known, that my thoughts of home expand far beyond a building and focus more on things like warmth, acceptance, joy, harmony and peace. And who doesn’t think these qualities desirable no matter where one happens to be or who he or she happens to be with. Those qualities are alive and present even when we’re alone.

Many people yearn at the holiday season to spend time with family and friends. This past year particularly, disastrous events have left hundreds of thousands of people in the world without shelter. Lives have been disrupted, loved one lost and families separated. What is the Christmas message in the face of all of this?

The Christmas story in the Bible inspires me. With a single star to light the way, alert shepherds and wise men found their way to a humble stable. Mary Baker Eddy says, “I celebrate Christmas…as the birth of Truth, the dawn of divine Love breaking upon the gloom of matter and evil with the glory of infinite being.” This is what the shepherds and the wise men found at the end of their journey. My prayer is that each one, no matter what their situation, will find the same.

Even with the mess in our living room—in fact, in spite of the mess in my living room–this is what I plan to find in my home and my heart this Christmas season.

Mi marido y yo movió nuestro hogar hace varios meses. debido a un cierto trabajo que necesitó ser hecho, hemos hecho que nuestra cama ahora instale en el cuarto vivo por tres meses. Las cajas y los muebles todavía se llenan alrededor de una manera más desordenada. ¿La estación de Navidad está aquí y es hora de adornar pero qué ahora? Esto me consiguió al pensamiento de una manera más grande de la significación verdadera de la estación del día de fiesta de Navidad. ¿Es solamente sobre las luces, decoraciones, haciendo compras en la alameda o hay una cierta manera más profunda, más significativa de celebrar? ¿Si Navidad celebra aparecer de Cristo a la humanidad, qué pudo ser una manera verdaderamente substancial de conmemorar este acontecimiento? Como generalmente cuando está hecho frente con una situación perplexing, rogué. Debajo de las atavíos materialistic de Navidad miente su nacimiento de Jesús, la celebración de la base-de aparecer del Cristo, verdad a la humanidad. Navidad celebra más que una natividad humana. La sustancia de la vida de Jesús trajo la aclaración, la salud, la esperanza y un sentido del oneness de cada individuo con el dios. Tiene que hacer con paz. Tiene muy poco a hacer con malla y materialism excesivo. Mi rezo afirmó lo que he sabido, ese mis pensamientos del hogar amplía lejano más allá de un edificio y se centra más en cosas como calor, la aceptación, la alegría, la armonía y la paz. Y quién no piensa estas calidades deseables no importa dónde una sucede ser o con quién él o ella sucede estar. Esas calidades están vivas y presentes incluso en que estamos solos. Mucha gente anhela en la estación del día de fiesta pasar tiempo con la familia y los amigos. Este último año particularmente, los acontecimientos desastrosos tienen centenares izquierdos de millares de gente en el mundo sin abrigo. Las vidas se han interrumpido, amaron uno perdido y las familias se separaron. ¿Cuál es el mensaje de Navidad en la cara de todo el esto? La historia de Navidad en la biblia me inspira. Con una sola estrella para encender la manera, los pastores alertas y los hombres sabios encontraron su manera a un establo humilde. El remolino del panadero de Maria dice, “yo celebra Navidad… como el nacimiento de la verdad, el amanecer del amor divino que se rompe sobre el abatimiento de la materia y mal con la gloria de ser infinito.” Esto es lo que encontraron los pastores y los hombres sabios en el final de su viaje. Mi rezo es que cada, no importa qué su situación, encontrará igual. Incluso con el lío en nuestra vida cuarto-en hecho, a pesar del lío en mi sitio vivo — esto es lo que planeo encontrar en mi hogar y mi corazón esta estación de Navidad.
